An Honest Review of The Rainbow Aparthotel Kalamaki

We’ve just been to Kalamaki for our 5th visit! We love it so much, it’s almost like a second home and one of the easiest holidays we have. We know where’s good, we know where’s bad and there’s always something new to try. This time, that something new to try was a new place to stay. This time we stayed at the Rainbow Aparthotel Kalamaki.

First Impressions of the Rainbow Aparthotel Kalamaki

We arrived at the Rainbow Aparthotel just after sunset. Luckily for us, it was the first stop on the transfer coach so no wondering what it would be like after seeing everyone else get dropped off!

We were greeted by the very friendly Sofia who got us all checked in. She took note of the special request I had submitted that our 2 rooms would be located close to each other. She then showed us to our rooms which were on the second floor. This is where I need to point out, there are no lifts here so we had 2 flights of stairs with 4 cases and 3 kids. Sofia did offer to help us and it wasn’t an issue but anyone with any mobility issues may find they’d be better off requesting a lower floor.

Rooms 216 and 219

Our rooms were located on the same floor on the same side with lovely rural views. I’m not going to lie, the rooms here are basic. They don’t pretend to be anything other than basic Greek Self-Catering apartments. Each of our rooms had 3 single beds, a small kitchenette and a bathroom with shower. The kitchenette was basic with 2 rings, a small fridge with a freezer compartment, a kettle and a sink but really, I didn’t plan on cooking so this was fine for us.

The bathrooms were small, a basic shower did the job but really could benefit from a hook to hold the shower head up and it would have made a big difference. We had a balcony too with 3 chairs looking out over the rural grounds where lots of chickens and cockerels roam free. Looks pretty but for the first few mornings, the early-rising cockerels were a little bit annoying! The rooms come equipped with air conditioning but there is an extra charge for the remote. We were charged €6 per night on check-in.

The Pool Area at the Rainbow Aparthotel Kalamaki

The Aparthotel Rainbow Kalamaki has a lovely big pool area with a children’s section. It’s nothing fancy but a decent size, cleaned daily and allowed inflatables. There are plenty of sunbeds available too. The beauty of staying in Self-Catering apartments is that there’s no need to get up at silly o’clock to reserve a sunbed by the pool. Although a select few felt they needed to when we were there, we were always up late and late to the pool, and never once struggled to find 5 beds together.

The Bar

The hotel bar is conveniently located right between the pool and the restaurant. A big selection of drinks is available at average hotel prices. I don’t know why but I didn’t like the beer on tap here – lots of places serve Mythos in an iced glass and it hits the spot… here it was in a room-temperature glass and I found it a bit fizzy but the bottles tasted much better!

Cocktails and mocktails are available too as well as a freezer full of ice creams. They do have a selection of bar snacks such as crisps and nuts and run a snack service serving chips, and all-day breakfast etc. etc. They also have a few TVs and show live sporting events. If there was something you wanted to watch in particular, the staff would put it on. One night we met up with some other ladies in the hotel also from Sheffield and watched the Sheffield Wednesday match.

The area surrounding the hotel is quiet and very pretty.

Restaurant

The restaurant looked lovely but I couldn’t write a full review of the food as we didn’t eat here. The menu looked great and there were often people eating there in the evening. Honestly, the food looked and smelled good. The prices were average for restaurants in Kalamaki around €11 for a main course and were all traditional Greek dishes.

Location of the Rainbow Aparthotel Kalamaki

This was the only concern I had before arriving – the location. In the end, I needed not worry, it’s not right in the middle of the strip like we are used to but it’s not far at all. It’s closer to the old Kalamaki road than we had been previously. Right across from the hotel is a small mini market and a little bar which I only ever saw locals sat drinking in. The hotel is right next to the Nikon Boutique Hotel which is beautiful looking.

A little further down the road is the Daisy apartments which also looked very nice with a pool for everyone to use. It’s a 10-minute walk maximum down to Antoni’s pool bar and 15 minutes will take you down to the beach. It’s fairly flat and accessible around there too so no need to worry about walking up big hills.

Overall sentiments

Our stay at the Rainbow Aparthotel Kalamaki was a good one. The beds were uncomfortable at first but no more uncomfortable than any other Greek self-catering I’ve stayed at. It’s a basic base and doesn’t pretend to be anything other than that. The staff are wonderful, the pool area is lovely and the place is clean.

It could do with a facelift and a few bits and bobs would make all the difference but after 3 years of stop-start travel I am not surprised things aren’t perfect. I think anyone who expects perfection in a Greek Self-Catering property needs to understand they’ll never enjoy their holiday if they don’t embrace all the little flaws.
