Your Ultimate Guide to Hand Luggage Sizes

Wherever you are travelling this year, there will likely be an option to add hold luggage onto your booking if you are flying. The amount spent on hold luggage really depends on how much carry-on you get included. This is your ultimate guide to hand luggage sizes to help you to make the right choice for you.

With every airline varying in size and weight, it can be a minefield. Some are stricter than others and some charge a lot more than others if your case doesn’t fit the exact requirements. It really pays to be informed and get your dimensions exactly right.

Hand Luggage sizes for Ryanair

Let’s start with the ones who are notorious for how small their hand luggage sizes are. And the one that does tend to be the strictest when it comes to charging if you are slightly over on size. Ryanair can be a great airline for some low-cost flights but only if you stick by the rules.

A small bag is included in a standard fare for Ryanair. the bag dimensions are 40x20x25cm. The bag must fit under the seat in front and can either be a handbag, laptop bag or backpack.

Hand Luggage sizes for Wizz Air

Hot on the heels of Ryanair with one of the strictest rules regarding hand luggage is Wizz Air. The budget airline is great for flights to Eastern Europe with connections even further beyond. Again, if you stick to the rules there will be no issues but if you don’t do your homework you might get a big charge to check in your luggage.

A carry-on bag is included as standard with all fares on Wizz Air currently. This carry-on bag has to be a maximum of 10kg in weight and minimum dimensions of 40x30x20cm. The carry-on bag must fit under the sea in front of you and can be a laptop bag, a women’s purse or a small backpack.

Cabin baggage sizes for EasyJet

One of the biggest airlines flying from all over the UK is EasyJet. Routes travel all over Europe at low-cost fares and with their package holidays. The Hand luggage sizes for EasyJet are a little more generous than the previous 2 airlines but still have restrictions. If you book a standard fare you will receive a Small Cabin Bag as standard.

EasyJet’s small cabin bag dimensions need to be under 45x36x20cm including handles and wheels. There is a maximum weight limit of 15kg but you need to be able to life & carry it yourself and it needs to fit under the seat in front.

Hand Luggage sizes for Jet2

Jet2 are undoubtedly one of my favourite low-cost airlines. From both a Travel agent and a customer point of view, they are easy to work with both when it comes to booking and when it actually comes to travelling. The hand luggage sizes for Jet2 are the most generous in terms of size in this list. I do usually travel with a backpack or soft bag rather than a hardshell case for hand luggage which I find is better. The generous allowance means that the overhead lockers can get pretty full so keep that in mind.

The hand luggage size for Jet2 is a 10kg bag with the maximum dimensions of 56x45x25cm including wheels and handles. Alongside this, you can also carry a small personal item such as a handbag, laptop bag or an airport purchase.

Cabin baggage sizes for Tui

Tui under various names has been around for all of my travel life I think. I remember back in the 90s when they were Britannia and then ThomsonFly and now Tui. They have been in the industry for years and know how to keep customers happy. If you book a flight only you will receive hand luggage as standard with the option to add on a hold case.

Your complimentary hand luggage must weigh up to 10kg and the dimensions up to 44x40x20cm. You are able to carry one small personal item such as a laptop or handbag and it must be stored under the seat in front.

Other Budget Airlines

There are a few others that I class as budget airlines, that are a little more niche but you may come across them, especially in peak seasons.

  • Vueling – one under-seat cabin bag within the dimensions 40x20x30cm
  • Norwegian – 1 under-seat bag weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions 30x20x38cm
  • Eurowings – 1 small cabin bag within the dimensions 40x30x25cm
  • Icelandair – 10kg bag in the dimensions 55x40x20
  • Pegasus – 1 under-seat bag weighing up to 3kg with the dimensions 40x30x15cm

I have chosen to list only the budget airlines as most scheduled airlines will include hold luggage as standard, but even if they don’t they do tend to be more generous with the hand luggage allowances.

If you’ve found a bargain you want to keep the costs as low as possible, keep in mind the hand luggage sizes. If you can’t fit anything in your hand luggage then you might want to consider switching to an airline with a bigger allowance or factoring in the cost of a checked-in bag. For up-to-date information please check directly with the airline as these allowances can change at any time.

The good news is that soon enough the limit to what liquids we can carry in hand luggage will soon change (Summer 2025 is the current target) but for now keep that in mind too.
