Lassi in Kefalonia is Beautiful

We’ve visited Lassi in Kefalonia a couple of times now. It is the perfect family destination for a traditional Greek holiday. A 3-hour 30-minute flight from the UK and only 30 minutes transfer, if that. Pristine white sandy beaches with gentle sloping seas, delicious restaurants and the most stunning sunsets.

On our last stay, we stayed in the Makris Gialos apartments. We had a maisonette room which was perfect for us. The maisonette room had 3 beds upstairs, ideal for the kids with its toilet. Downstairs has 2 beds, a kitchenette, a bathroom and a terrace. All within a stone’s throw of the pool too. A good-sized but no slide, but that doesn’t matter to my kids. They had an inflatable and a ball which was enough for them to play with when we stayed by the pool. Plenty of sunbeds around the pool too and a pool bar.

To be honest there’s not much more I want from a self-catering property. The location is amazing, a 2-minute walk to the beautiful Makris Gialos beach, Makris Gialos taverna and staircase café. We frequented them all almost daily!

Makris Gialos Beach

Makris Gialos beach is so gorgeous. The quiet part of it at the bottom of the staircase café only had 2 rows of sunbeds. It’s only about €7 for 2 beds and a parasol is reasonable for the whole day. There are water sports there too, pedalos, paddle boarding, banana boats etc. We spent a day down there playing in the sand and the sea.

I honestly can’t even begin to explain just how clear the water is here. This was my main reason for coming back, crystal clear with fish swimming right on the shore. Jay and the kids went off snorkelling and saw all kinds of fish and sea life not too far from the shore. I am happy on my sunbed, Frappé in hand and a good book!

Staircase Café

Staircase café is my absolute favourite place to go for lunch. We found it by accident one night when we wanted to go to the beach to catch the sunset. There are signs down to Makris Gialos Taverna and we turned left just as we reached it and stumbled across this little gem.

The price is good and there’s a big variety of lunches and light daytime meals. Toasties, burgers, sandwiches etc but my favourite was the fruit salad with Greek yoghurt and honey it was to die for. As it’s the healthy option I didn’t feel too guilty washing it down with a large Mythos!

Costa Costa Beach

The kids couldn’t wait to go back to Lassi Kefalonia specifically for Costa Costa beach which is very slightly up the coast from Makris Gialos. By slightly I mean it takes 5 minutes to walk along the seafront to reach it. You can’t miss it though the sunbeds switch from standard blue ones to padded ones.

There’s a row of Bali Beds on the back row right in front of the very modern Costa Costa beach bar. It’s a different vibe here. There’s a DJ playing, a lifeguard and changing rooms. A lot more facilities mean higher prices for the beds. The mid rows aren’t too badly priced at €10 for 2 beds and a parasol. Front rows are a little more, I can’t remember exactly but between €12 – €15. The Bali beds are the most expensive despite being right at the back €30 for the day. Not too pricey considering there are effectively 4 beds here.

This is what we promised we’d have for the day when we were planning our trip back. An expensive luxury on what was meant to be a budget break but a memory that the kids were buzzing about, and still are, to be honest. Owen keeps telling us about the room we had on the beach! The water was a bit choppy that day and the kids were playing in the waves… With the amount of sand they brought back to the room in their swimwear I’m surprised there was any sand left on the beach!

Paleostafida Beach

My Favourite beach in Lassi Kefalonia was a little further in the opposite direction from Costa Costa. It’s called Paleostafida Beach. It’s just in a little cove with about 24 pairs of beds total, a little bar selling Frappés (essential) soft drinks, alcoholic drinks and snacks too. This beach seems to be so gently shelved that the kids can walk out for ages before it gets too deep for them. Perfect for families with children, well worth the extra walk down the coast.

Argostoli

We headed into Argostoli a couple of times to try and spot some turtles in the harbour. We did manage to see two! it’s just brilliant to see them in the wild, it honestly made my day each time. Argostoli is great for a walk around, a stop in a café and a bit of souvenir shopping too. I have been told that there are some nice restaurants down there.

We only ever headed down in the morning straight after breakfast so didn’t try any first-hand. A taxi from Lassi to Argostoli takes about 5 minutes and costs €6. By going in the morning we increased our chances of seeing turtles. They follow the fishing boats into the harbour in the morning trying to catch some breakfast.

Good Food

We had some wonderful meals. Greek food is one of my favourites so it’s hard to disappoint me with it. There are a lot of restaurants in Lassi Kefalonia. Many didn’t open in 2020 with such a late start to the season, unfortunately. The ones that did were very welcoming and the food was well priced. Our first meal was at Tzogias which is on the main strip a couple of minutes walk from our apartments. We ate here on our last stay and couldn’t wait to go again.

We ate at Tanu a couple of times because Noah thought the kid’s portion of Beef Stifado was the best food he’s ever eaten! Aqua Marina is also lovely. We had lunch here one day and dinner another. The lady who runs it is so friendly and accommodating. The prettiest restaurant is Sirtaki. The main restaurant wasn’t open in 2020 but all meals were taken in the secret garden. It’s just so pretty with candles, all around. It feels exactly as it’s named, like a secret garden. You need to visit when you go to Lassi Kefalonia.

Despite all of the wonderful restaurants we visited, my favourite evening meal was at our apartments. We enquired about a BBQ at the bar, to be told we’re doing it on demand and they’d do it for us the next day. I told them I don’t eat meat but I do eat fish. The barman went to the harbour that next morning and fetched the freshest Sea Bream I’d ever eaten. Cooked so simply to perfection on the BBQ with a fresh Greek Salad on the side. A great night was had by all, just us and the barman’s family!

That Sunset though…

And a special mention for the week has to go to Logos bar. If you’ve ever been to Lassi Kefalonia you cannot miss the HUGE sign high up on the hill. It always looked so far up the hill but I looked into it and heard about the sunset views. We headed up on our last evening for pre-dinner drinks. We were not disappointed by the sunset! It was stunning and not half as far up the hill as I thought! I’m not sure I’d have wanted to go up it in the midday sun though! Anyway, I highly recommend a visit if you are ever in Lassi!

I adore Kefalonia, and all of the Ionian islands to be honest. They are ideal family destinations, with picture-perfect beaches, glorious sunshine and delicious food!

You can all about the other Greek islands here to choose the best one for you and your family.
