If you’re thinking of heading to the island of Lefkada this summer, check out the lovely Nidri. The seaside resort is small but it packs in a lot. In this Nidri travel guide, I’ll help you decide where to stay, where to eat and how to spend your days. We spent 11 nights here and could have easily stayed for another 2 weeks and still would have had things to do.

The Nidri Travel Guide Basics

Situated on the East coast of the Island of Lefkada, Nidri is around an hour’s transfer time from Preveza airport. Interestingly, you fly into Preveza on the mainland but transfer over by road over a bridge to the island. The Island of Lefkada (sometimes called Lefkas) is an Ionian island situated slightly further North than Kefalonia.

The majority of accommodation, bars and restaurants are situated either along the main resort road or by the wea. It’s all very flat and easily accessible to those with pushchairs or mobility issues. Visit between May and October for the best weather, also most of the restaurants and bars are open only during this time too.

Where to Stay in Nidri

The majority of places to stay only offer either Bed & Breakfast or Self Catering. Occasionally, you might find somewhere that offers a little more but I’d say that you’ll miss out on experiencing all that the resort has to offer if you don’t eat and drink out. We stayed in the Captain Stavros Hotel and enjoyed our stay.

Location wise it’s ideally placed at the end of the main resort, 2 minutes walk from the water and all the bars and restaurants. We had a maisonette room which was plenty big enough for us, the terrace right next to the pool made it the perfect place to sit and enjoy a beverage whilst the kids played in the pool. If you are a bigger family like us, I can’t fault it at all. If you’re interested in booking let me know.

Where to Eat in Nidri

Head into the resort for a huge selection of bars and restaurants with lots of tastes catered for. I loved heading down to the waterfront to eat, just because I love the feeling of being by the sea. Mamma Mia! The restaurant was one of our favourites, TOMs also was lovely, there weren’t many that I didn’t like! You won’t have to go far to fund somewhere to suit you.

The Nidri Travel Guide to Nightlife

Nightlife is pretty low-key. A HUGE selection of bars and tavernas for you to choose from. The rock bar was great, the kids enjoyed playing in the arcades and the desert bars were nice after we’d walked dinner off we could finish with a waffle or a crepe.

The Nidri Travel Guide to The Beach

The shoreline is pebbly with a selection of bars that have loungers along the coast. The water is shallow and blue, so don’t forget your beach shoes when you head down for a swim. There are places to rent kayaks and jet skis for those who are more adventurous!

Days Out from Nidri

My favourite day out from Nidri was heading over to Meganisi Island. During the summer season head down to the ferry port -in front of Madarinos restaurant. The times vary as the season progresses but the timetable can be found pinned on the boxes nearby or on the Ferryboat Meganisi Website. Hiring a boat for the day is another very popular option for a day out, allowing you to visit many islands and beautiful beaches during the day.

Nidri Waterfalls are another great chance to see the stunning landscape – when we visited in August the waterfall was running dry due to the hot summer so early or late summer are better times to see this than right in the middle.

Egremni Beach on the South West Coast can only be reached if you hire a car but the powder sand sprinkled with pebbles needs to be seen to be believed. Lefkada Town is also worth a visit, public transport or hire cars can get you there for the day to see the sights. It’s around a 25-minute trip by car and a great way to spend a day visiting the shops and waterfront cafes.

Nidri with Families

Whether your kids are small and in pushchairs or older and more independent, Nidri would make a great holiday for your family. The compact and flat nature of the resort makes it so easy to get around. Most of the hotels have pools, the beaches plenty of watersports and there are some cracking milkshakes at the cafes on the seafront. Most of the restaurants offer kids’ menus and do smaller portions for children too. My lot loved going to the 2 arcades in town and spending a bit of their spending money there and also they enjoyed the visits to Meganisi and snorkelling in the crystal clear waters.

I’d highly recommend visiting, whether you are a family, a couple, a group of friends or even spending the trip alone. It feels safe, it’s easy to get around and it’s so so pretty!

Have a great holiday!
